Max painted portraits of himself, his family, and his close friends throughout his life. He was also commissioned to do portraits, of which many times, he would then refuse to sell to the buyer.
He was prone to painting over or destroying portraits of those he was upset with.

Shertz had a keen sense of his subjects and captured not only their likeness but their psyches as well.
His portraits show much diversity in style and are usually quite animated and humorous, particularly when it came to his self-portraits.
